HTFF January Book Selection

Our February book club meeting is approaching, and we are pleased to announce our next selection: “The Sum of Us: A Close Look at Racism.”

The HTFF Freedom Readers Book Club is more than a book club — it’s a civic education and empowerment designed to inspire critical thinking, community dialogue, and collective action through reading and comprehension.

Rooted in the legacy of Harriet Tubman, our book club uses literature as a tool for liberation, helping participants better understand history, policy, power, and their role in shaping a just future.

What Is the HTFF Book Club?

The HTFF Book Club is a guided reading and discussion that connects books to real-world civic change.

Participants explore powerful texts that examine:

Civil rights and social justice movements

Voting rights and democracy

Environmental justice

Mass incarceration and legal equity

Why Reading for Civic Change Matters

  • Understanding systems is the first step to changing them.
  • Through intentional reading and comprehension, participants:
  • Build critical thinking and media literacy skills
  • Gain historical and political awareness
  • Learn how policies affect everyday life
  • Strengthen their voice in civic spaces
  • Feel empowered to engage, organize, and vote
  • This program is designed for everyday people, not academics — no prior experience required, just curiosity and commitment.

Books are chosen to spark dialogue, challenge assumptions, and connect learning directly to HTFF’s advocacy and community efforts.

Who Should Join?

The HTFF Book Club is open to:

  • Community members seeking deeper understanding of civic issues
  • Students and lifelong learners
  • Activists, organizers, and advocates
